elections.maricopa.govA letter from Dr. Gabrielle Goodrick
Dear neighbor,
My name is Dr. Gabrielle Goodrick, and I’m a family physician here in Phoenix. I opened my own clinic in 1999 and have spent my career providing abortion care to Arizonans. I’m telling you this so that when I describe what our laws do, you know I am not speaking from theory. I have lived it, in my exam rooms and with my patients.
Just this year, state Rep. Matt Gress voted to make it a crime to receive or send the abortion pill in the mail. Over 25 years ago, I was the first doctor in the Southwest to prescribe it.
I love my work and the patients I care for, but it has never come without risk, for me or for my family. You may have noticed that I am signing this with my real name, and I want to be honest about what that costs. At the front desk of my clinic, the glass is bullet-resistant. Across it, in large letters, are the words WE PERSIST. That glass is not decoration. Since 1977, people who do what I do have been the target of eleven murders and twenty-six attempted murders in this country, along with forty-two bombings and hundreds of arsons and assaults, and last year the threats and stalking against providers more than doubled. This is not abstract to me. Most days I carry bear mace in my bag, and I bring my dog to work.
This is not the first time my name and my work have cost me something. More than ten years ago, a private school sent us a letter, two pages, three weeks before the school year started, telling us my daughter could no longer attend. The reason was simple. I provide abortion care, and according to the school, that meant she had not followed their moral code. She was fourteen, a straight-A student on the swim team. A week later, before he had even started, my son was turned away from a different school for the same reason.
I am sharing this so you understand what this work can take from the people I love, and that I am putting my name on this letter anyway, because what is happening in our state is worth saying plainly, out loud, by someone willing to stand behind it.
I am writing to ask for three of your votes. Vote for Aaron Lieberman for state senate. Vote for Tammy Caputi and Karen Gresham for state house. Don’t give any of those votes to Matt Gress. Vote on or before November 3.
Let me tell you why, from inside the room where these laws actually land.
Matt Gress wants you to think he is one of the reasonable ones on this issue. In 2024, he voted to repeal Arizona’s 1864 abortion ban. But it was one vote, not his whole record, and he’s counting on you to stop there.
Here is the part almost nobody was told. The year before that repeal vote, Gress spent an entire session trying to write fetal personhood into Arizona law, five separate times. Fetal personhood would give a fetus the same legal standing as a person, which would put patients and the doctors who care for them at legal risk for what happens in a pregnancy. He sponsored a bill letting courts order child support back to the date of a confirmed pregnancy. Governor Hobbs vetoed it, writing that it was dressed up as support for families while it actually threatened the reproductive rights of Arizonans. This is why I am asking you to vote for Aaron Lieberman, Tammy Caputi, and Karen Gresham, and to make sure Matt Gress does not get another term to keep trying.
In 2025, Gress voted for what advocates called a backdoor abortion ban, which threatened to “defund” Planned Parenthood and restrict doctors from informing patients about crucial care, even in hospital emergency rooms. In 2026 he voted again for fetal personhood and to make it a crime to receive abortion medication in the mail, punishable for the patient who orders it and the pharmacist who fills it. Nearly half of the over 13,000 abortions in Arizona were medication abortions in 2024. Vote for the three people who won’t turn that into a crime. Vote for Aaron Lieberman, Tammy Caputi, and Karen Gresham. Not Matt Gress.
Patients tell me all the time how grateful they are that telehealth is now available to them, that they can do this from home instead of driving hours to a clinic. I tell them the truth: That has only been possible since this February and only because of who was elected and who voted. If we truly care about protecting abortion rights in Arizona, then it’s our responsibility to send people to the Capitol who will be champions for our rights and our health. That is exactly why this election matters as much as it does.
His record is not simply a matter of opinion, and it doesn’t matter what’s in his heart. It’s the set of votes I’m forced to actually practice under. This November, you get to decide whether he gets another term to keep at it. Vote for Aaron Lieberman, Tammy Caputi, and Karen Gresham on or before November 3.
Let me tell you who they are, because your ballot is going to ask you about all three. Karen Gresham has spent years on the Madison Elementary School District governing board, and has been a longtime Planned Parenthood supporter and volunteer. She ran for this same seat in 2024 and lost by about two percent of the vote. Sit with that. In a district this size, two percent is a few streets, a single precinct, you and the people on your block. She supports abortion rights, plainly and on the record. That is why I am asking you to vote for Karen Gresham, alongside Tammy Caputi and Aaron Lieberman, and to leave Matt Gress off your ballot.
Tammy Caputi has spent two decades running a business and meeting a payroll, and she is running on making this district more affordable to live in. She supports abortion rights just as plainly. Vote for Tammy Caputi, alongside Karen Gresham and Aaron Lieberman.
Aaron Lieberman is running for state senate, and he supports abortion rights without hedging. His race sits on the same ballot as both of these house seats, decided by the same voters, in the same trip to the mailbox. Vote for Aaron Lieberman for state senate, Tammy Caputi and Karen Gresham for state house, on or before November 3.
Your ballot is in your hands, or it will be in a day or two. You do not have to take my word for it. Every vote Matt Gress has cast is public record, and I hope you will look, because it is worse in full than anything I have room for here. Then I hope you will vote for Aaron Lieberman for state senate, and Tammy Caputi and Karen Gresham for state house, on or before November 3.
I can care for the person sitting in front of me. I cannot change the law that follows them through my door. Your vote can. That is why I put my name on this. Thank you for reading it to the end.
In service,
Dr. Gabrielle Goodrick
Camelback Family Planning, Phoenix
P.S. I have provided abortion care in Phoenix for more than 25 years, and I signed this with my real name because the stakes are that high. In 2023, Matt Gress wrote a bill so sweeping that a woman could be ordered to pay child support for her own pregnancy, and the governor vetoed it as a threat to Arizonans’ rights. He wrote five bills like it. Then he cast one repeal vote and asked you to remember only that. Do not let him. Vote for Aaron Lieberman for state senate, and Tammy Caputi and Karen Gresham for state house, on or before November 3.
